Mae Win Subdistrict – A Land of Nature and Traditional Life

Mae Win Subdistrict is located in the southwest of Mae Wang District, Chiang Mai Province, just 13 km from the district office. It consists of over 19 villages, mostly inhabited by the Karen (Pga K’nyau) people, who have lived alongside elephants like family since ancient times. They continue to preserve their traditional way of life and culture, allowing visitors to experience a simple, warm, and truly nature-connected lifestyle.

Spanning over 276,000 rai, Mae Win is filled with rolling mountains and lush tropical forests, making it an ideal destination for year-round travel. The fresh, cool air and breathtaking natural scenery ensure that a visit here is more than just a stay—it is an opportunity to recharge both body and soul.

Visitors can also experience tribal culture up close, including farming, vegetable planting, preparing local dishes, and exploring traditional wisdom. Adventure lovers can enjoy activities such as hiking, mountain climbing, and swimming in waterfalls, making Mae Win a destination that fulfills every desire—relaxation, learning, and fun in nature.

More Than a Journey. It’s a Family.

Hill Tribes Eco Lodges was born from a deep love for our elephants and a desire to protect our local Karen community. We rescue elephants from the harsh tourism industry and provide them with a safe haven to forage, bathe, and simply be elephants again. When you stay with us, your visit directly funds their  food, medical care, and supports the livelihood of our village. Come as a guest, leave as family.

Why did we create Hilltribes Eco Lodges?

We wanted to create a place where people can escape the chaos of city life and reconnect with nature in a meaningful way. Here, you can experience the lifestyle of the Karen hill tribe and learn how to coexist with elephants in a respectful and friendly manner.

Hilltribes Eco Lodges is not just a “place to stay” — it is a home of experiences, offering you the chance to witness elephants living naturally. There are no shows, no forced activities, just observing them live freely — whether foraging, wandering in the forest, playing in the mud, or bathing joyfully

Here you will…

  • Experience elephants in a conservation-focused way — watch them live freely and peacefully in their natural habitat.
  • Learn about Karen hill tribe culture — living in harmony with the forest through farming, handicrafts, and traditional cuisine.
  • Relax amidst pure nature — wake up to birdsong, breathe fresh mountain air, enjoy morning mist, waterfalls, and stunning mountain views.
  • Enjoy safe adventures — with activities such as trekking, waterfall visits, or exciting bamboo rafting.
  • Every visit is not just a getaway; it is part of elephant conservation and supporting local communities, ensuring elephants can live freely and happily.

Come and experience the serenity, beauty, and lifestyle of elephants at Hilltribes Eco Lodges…
where nature, culture, and elephants await to inspire and teach you

Mission

Hill Tribes Ecolodges Home Stay

We believe travel should mean something.

Our mission is to create experiences that connect people with local culture and the elephants who share this land

on terms that are honest, ethical, and rooted in genuine care.

We’ve built a place where elephants can simply be. No performances, no pressure

just space to live as they should. Alongside that, we work closely with local communities to share their traditions, knowledge, and way of life with the visitors who come here from across the world.

We think responsible travel can actually change things. And that’s what we’re here to do.

Vision

Hill Tribes Ecolodges Home Stay

We’re surrounded by mountains, forest,

and a landscape that reminds you — daily — why this all matters.

Our vision is straightforward: a world where elephants live free. Not managed, not exploited, not performing for anyone. Just free, safe, and treated as the wild animals they are.

We also believe tourism, done right, can drive real change. So we’ve shaped every part of what we do around one idea — that people can connect deeply with elephants and nature without taking anything away from either.

And we haven’t forgotten the people who’ve always been here. Preserving Karen culture — its identity, its wisdom, its future — is just as central to who we are.
Responsible tourism, to us, means everyone benefits. The land, the elephants, and the community alike.
